Clos Haut-Peyraguey was the smallest of the Premier Crus Classés of Sauternes in 1855 (with ‘only’ its 8.5 hectares) – it has lost none of its grandeur and charisma for the 2014 vintage, offering a Sauternes of dazzling freshness and complexity. Clos Haut-Peyraguey 2014 has concocted a remarkable blend. The Sémillon is very well concentrated: the wine gets its freshness not from the Sauvignon Blanc (here at 5%) but from the Sémillon, which does not suffer from any heaviness. The liquor is pure and the clarity of the botrytis cinerea is precise and ample. The olfaction immediately plunges us into a sensation of tension (freshness and acidity) which prefigures the balance and lengthens it on the palate. Juice of guava, dried apricot, mango, candied lemon, spices: an impromptu chorus of aromas. The arrival on the palate is precise and dynamic and develops on a mid-palate as complex as the nose. The wine has length and is both dense and very airy. The finish on white pepper and ginger rounds off this graceful Sauternes.
